I am learning about freedom

I am learning
about freedom

about how to feel free
in the everyday
when my day is
held
by gravity
by commitments
by motherly duties

I am learning
that my freedom
is interconnected to the whole
held up by chain links with others

that part of my ancestry
of being white
meant chaining up others
and it’s our job
our duty to unravel this mess

that by my very libra nature
I believe in freedom for all
I believe in fighting for the oppressed

yet I believe in light - heavy - light*
and while I will spend all of my days fighting for others
I will never turn away from myself
from human pleasure & joy
from finding freedom
and silliness in my heart
while I work for freedom for all
with my head & my hands

I am learning
about all of the ways in which
I am tethered
the ways in which I am caged animal
how I lock myself up
and then how I find my own key
day in
and
day out

I am learning
about all of the ways
I fight against the tide for freedom
and about the ways
in which I
effortlessly
let it flow into my life

I am learning
to laugh about it all
to stumble around in the dark
to find the light
and then to follow it
running wildly at breakneck speed
toward freedom
toward light and liberation
shaking free of my shackles
lifting veils off others as I go
the illusion turning into technicolor behind me
leaving a rainbow in my wake

I am relentlessly choosing freedom
in a society thats built to tether

I am opening my heart
and letting freedom cascade around me
like keys dropping
with feathers from the sky
looking up
and catching each
free
falling
snowflake
on my tongue

I am only free
if you are free

I am learning
about freedom

Freedom inspirations:

The small man

Builds cages for everyone

He knows.

While the sage,

Who has to duck his head

When the moon is low,

Keeps dropping keys all night long

For the

Beautiful

Rowdy

Prisoners.
